Texas got what it needed from non-conference play: three wins, a signature comeback against the nation’s No. 1 team and a much clearer picture of what still needs to improve before SEC play begins.
The Longhorns close the first three games 3-0 after beating Texas State 59-7, Ohio State 24-23 and UTSA 30-6. Texas scored 113 points and allowed 36, and the Longhorns remain No. 1 in the AP Top 25 heading into the trip to Tennessee.
The résumé is strong. The defense has been the most consistent part of the team. The offense has shown a high ceiling without playing its cleanest football every week.
That combination makes Texas’ non-conference stretch encouraging — and unfinished.
